چکیده

Affected by climatic conditions such as rainfall, evaporation and air temperature, most of the backfill soil is in an unsaturated state, decrease matric suction leads to failure retaining structure. In view this, this study takes vertical rigid wall with narrow research object, assuming that behind forms a circular arch considering interlayer shear stress; thus, analytical solution active earth pressure derived based on thin layer element method. The reliability method verified comparing experimental existing theoretical results. A parameter analysis demonstrates increase interface friction angle moving wall–soil, average stress coefficient zone I II increases gradually, but fixed decreases; effective internal cohesion, decreases tension crack depth increases; angle, upper part slightly, while lower obviously; suction, first rapidly then decreases, distribution pattern horizontal remains unchanged; aspect ratio, when ratio smaller, attenuation more obvious; until reaches certain value, basically unchanged.

Estimation of active earth pressure against rigid retaining walls considering arching effects

It is known that the distribution of active earth pressure against a translating rigid wall is not triangular but nonlinear, owing to arching effects in the backfill. In the present paper, a new formulation is proposed for calculating the active earth pressure on a rigid retaining wall undergoing horizontal translation. It takes into account the arching effects that occur in the backfill (or re...

Estimation of the Active Earth Pressure with Inclined Cohesive Backfills: the Effect of Intermediate Principal Stress is Considered

Estimating active earth pressure accurately is very important when designing retaining wall. Based on the unified strength theory and plane strain assumption, an analytical solution has been developed to determine the active lateral earth pressure distribution on a retaining structure with the inclined cohesive backfill considering the effect of the intermediate principal stress. The solution d...

Seismic Active Earth Pressure of Narrow Geosynthetic-Reinforced Backfill on Rigid Facing

In the narrow geosynthetic-reinforced retaining walls a stable rear wall exists in a short distance and so there is no enough space to extend appropriate length of reinforcements. In this case, the probability of overturning of retaining wall increases especially when subjected to earthquake loading. To increase the stability of the wall, reinforcements may be connected to the stable rear surfa...
